7 Steps of Egg Donation

Coordination Egg Donation Services Internationally

The egg donation process is made up of 7 basic steps. The specifics may vary slightly if the patient uses frozen eggs or requests preimplantation genetic diagnosis for an embryo. For patients living outside of the Los Angeles area, most of the steps of egg donation can be coordinated with a local physician. Dr. Jain can work with your local physician to perform initial screening and blood work and coordinate medications. This means that, in most cases, patients from outside of California won’t need to come to the clinic in Santa Monica (Los Angeles) until the time of the embryo transfer itself. For some international or out of state patients, the latter usually requires about a one-week stay in the Los Angeles area.

While many of our patients live in the Los Angeles area, many come from other parts of the world, attracted by Dr. Jain’s expertise. We look forward to meeting with you. Please contact us today to get started.

#1 Initial Consultation

This involves the various types of fertility screening and counseling for the intended parents to explore whether treatment using a donor egg is a good choice.

#2 Mock Cycle

The intended mother or gestational carrier undergoes a test cycle to ensure she is healthy and ready to receive a donor egg. This includes taking hormones to prepare the womb and performing a mock embryo transfer procedure to ensure that placement of the fertilized embryo will go smoothly.

#3 Retain Donor

The intended parents collaborate with Santa Monica Fertility to select and retain a suitable donor. The donor is then screened and tested by the fertility doctor.

#4 Synchronize Periods with Donor

Both donor and intended mother receive hormones over a period of time to synchronize their menstrual cycles. Then, the donor goes through an egg stimulation cycle to prepare for egg retrieval.

#5 Retrieve and Fertilize Eggs

The donor eggs are retrieved from the donor’s ovaries and fertilized with the male partner’s sperm.

#6 Embryo Transfer

The embryo is allowed to develop for five days in the IVF dish after which it is transferred into the intended mother’s uterus. After approximately 1 week, a pregnancy test is done to confirm that the transfer was successful.

#7 Hormonal Supplementation

The intended mother will need to receive supplemental hormones for the first 12 weeks. After this time, the placenta will be able to provide the necessary hormones for normal fetal development.

Donor Egg Bank

Frozen Donor Egg Bank & Egg Donation Egg donation allows women to become pregnant even when they lack eggs of their own, or their eggs are of poor quality. In addition to fresh donor eggs, frozen donor eggs offer an alternative to traditional egg donation. Frozen eggs allow for ease in cycle planning and are immediately available from a variety of donors. Pregnancy rates from frozen eggs are comparable to the nationally published rates reported for fresh donor eggs.
