Because many women are delaying motherhood until later in life, we see many patients who are simply unable to conceive using their own eggs. As women age, the number and quality of their eggs drastically decline. The women who participate in our shared donor egg program as egg donors provide young, high-quality eggs. They must also meet strict qualifications and go through a thorough screening process, which leads to high pregnancy rates and increase the chances of recipients having healthy babies.
Why Choose Our Shared Donor Egg Program?
At Santa Monica Fertility, we created our shared egg donor program to ensure the highest success rates possible. The live birth rate using a shared batch of donor eggs is approximately 65% per transfer – the same success rate seen by recipients in traditional, non-shared egg donation IVF cycles.
We start the egg batch size with eight fresh donor eggs per patient for each shared cycle. This number helps to ensure that a sufficient number of fresh and frozen embryos will be available for transfer. Depending on the fertility goals of the intended parent/s, the batch can also be increased.
Because live birth rates using donor eggs at our clinic are very high, we transfer only one embryo per cycle (two if the prospective parent/s wish for twins). The remaining embryos are frozen for future use, i.e. to try for a sibling.
If a first embryo transfer doesn’t lead to a live birth, a second transfer using a frozen embryo is included at no additional cost as part of the shared egg donation cycle fee – as long as frozen embryos are available.
What Factors Affect Shared Egg Donation Success Rates?
The excellent live birth rate of 65% per egg donation cycle at Santa Monica Fertility is due to many factors:
- Careful donor selection, ensuring sufficient quantity of eggs to share per batch
- High quality of the eggs retrieved from young donors
- The health of the mother and her history of reproductive issues besides poor egg quality or quantity
- How the eggs are fertilized – intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) ensures fertilization and makes embryo screening possible
- PGD (Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis) to ensure only chromosomally normal embryos are used
- The skill with which the embryos are incubated and transferred
- Appropriate hormonal support to ensure the embryo thrives after transfer
Shared Egg Donor Program Costs
With this type of egg donation, more than one set of prospective parents share the eggs provided by a donor during a single shared egg donation cycle. This approach greatly reduces the expense for each recipient since costs are shared. For traditional non-shared donor egg IVF cycles, the overall cost is around $50,000 – $80,000. However, a fresh shared egg donor IVF cycle is a more affordable egg donation treatment option, starting at approximately $31,400.
These costs include donor agency fees, donor compensation, donor medication, donor screening, fertility monitoring, egg retrieval, all necessary laboratory procedures as well as embryo transfer. A shared egg donor program spreads the cost over more than one set of prospective parents while maintaining high pregnancy rates seen with traditional, non-shared egg donation.

If our fresh shared egg donor program is still out of reach for financial reasons, the use of frozen donor eggs offers another, even more affordable egg donation option at approximately $23,550 per cycle. There are 6 frozen eggs in a batch and all the eggs are from the same carefully selected, high-quality donors.
