Gender SelectionSanta Monica Fertility Specialists offers two options for gender selection. Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD)PGD is performed in the laboratory when the growing embryos are at the eight-cell stage. An opening is made in the outer membrane (zona pellucida) of the embryo, and one cell is removed for analysis. The gender is then determined by the presence of the X chromosome or the Y chromosome. By transferring only embryos of the desired gender, we can offer a 99% probability of successful gender selection. PGD also makes it possible to screen for chromosomal abnormalities, a procedure we discuss in greater detail in the IVF section of this website. For more information, please see Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis. Sperm Gender SelectionGender selection based on differences in the weight of the X-carrying
(female) or Y-carrying (male) sperm are still under investigation. We
will be happy to discuss the benefits and limitations of this technology
with you. |
