Tips for Staying Fit While Traveling and TTC

Posted by:Sarah Newsum Categories: Trying to Conceive, Wellness,

Urban romanceTraveling can break many people’s resolve to eat healthy and stick to an exercise routine. If you’re going to be traveling for infertility services, or you’re taking a romantic trip with your partner in the hope of getting pregnant, you can still stay healthy and enjoy your travels. Here are 5 tips to keep in mind that can help you stay healthy and fit despite long flights, the sedentary nature of travel, and the temptations of junk food.

Plan Ahead for Healthy Dining

Research healthy dining options in advance. One of the trickiest things about eating healthy on a vacation is that it’s just sometimes more convenient to grab something unhealthy than find someplace that offers healthy options. To avoid this, take some time to research healthy dining options before you’re hungry. In the morning, before you leave your hotel, do some quick research. What restaurants offer the healthy food choices you’re looking for?

Schedule Exercise Into Your Day

Since traveling is going to take a lot of your time, you’ll need to plan when you exercise or it just won’t happen. Then stick to it. Wake up 30 minutes early, or schedule it in at the end of the day (if you are sure you’ll do it). Find ways of working in exercise throughout the day. Walking around the block may feel like the last thing you want to do after a long flight, but it will help you stay healthy. Use the fitness room, or swim laps at the hotel pool. Another great way to sneak in some exercise while traveling is to walk around your new city and enjoy the sights. Remember to exercise on travel days, too. Exercising between flights encourages healthy circulation and helps you maintain your fitness level during travel.

Pack Good Shoes

Make sure you pack a pair of sneakers, since exercising in high heels can damage your feet. If packing space is limited, find a lightweight and crushable pair of exercise shoes. Your favorite brand may be bulkier and may support your feet better, but having a passable pair of sneakers is much better than not having any at all during your trip.

Get Plenty of Sleep

Sleep is easy to skimp on during travel. Late flights, early morning appointments, intermittent chaos, and jetlag can wreck havoc in your sleeping schedule. If you need 8 hours of sleep at home, you still need 8 hours when you’re traveling. People often get sick during travel or just after it, and one of the most important preventative measures to prevent sickness is to get enough sleep.

Stay Hydrated

Long flights with stuffy air can dehydrate you, leading to headaches, fatigue, irritability, and a weakened immune system. Purchase bottled water at airports and drink between flights. Make sure all the water you’re drinking is safe and skip the ice if you’re in an area where the tap water is questionable. If you stay hydrated during your trip, you’ll feel more energetic and be more enthusiastic about exercise.

Exercise videos

You may prefer a long run to a yoga routine, but there’s nothing like the convenience of exercising to a video on your iPad in your hotel room. Pick a few out that you enjoy and bookmark them so that when you have some downtime in your hotel room, you can fit in a quick workout (even if the hotel fitness room is closed for the day).

Traveling can be a great time to recommit to a healthy lifestyle.
